How Defensive Driving Could Lower Your Insurance Rate

Several auto insurance companies want your business. And some will tell you if you take a defensive driving course, you could lower your insurance rates. How much? And for how long? Is this state-mandated?

The good news is some states actually require an insurance reduction be given for taking defensive driving. Then there are states that endorse a discount, but leave it up to your insurer. So do you get a car insurance discount for taking online defensive driving or traffic school?

Well taking online traffic school and defensive driving courses can keep your insurance premiums from rising. Most people take these courses for a point reduction from a recent traffic ticket. Therefore, if you complete the course you will have those points dismissed and your insurance will not see that as part of your driving record.

See below to find out what your state may allow, or even mandate, if you are eligible for completing online defensive driving:

– Takes off points to avoid insurance increases. Check with insurer on taking for a discount.

If you are 55 and up, Mature driver courses usually provide a discount. For example, California, New Jersey and Florida all have online mature driver programs that will give you a insurance reduction for 3 years.

Did your state not fall under this list? Not to worry, there are still programs for you to take, but your best bet is to check with your insurance company first before you sign-up. Usually if you provide the name of the school and website, they will be able to verify what discount, if any, you can receive. Then it is just a matter of providing proof of completion (usually a certificate given by the school) to the insurance company to redeem your discount.
